This is a very simple concept of positive reinforcement. On steroids. Everyone loves to be informed when they have done something well. It makes us feel good and it makes us know our efforts are appreciated. But what if we celebrated instead of merely acknowledging the behaviour we wish to see again.
Flipping this around I honestly believe the culture of an organisation is the sum total of the behaviour that we wish to tolerate. Celebrating success is normal and accepted in many organisations, but what about celebrating behaviour even when things do not necessarily go your way. I remember growing up in mining communities where parties would be held to celebrate reaching milestones such as total shifts without fatalities. I remember in my working life also opening a bottle of (non alcoholic) sparkling wine in the office to celebrate the start of a new financial year after an extremely difficult year.
A celebration is different to an acknowledgment or a pat on the back. It is a recognition over and above what is normal. It is telling the world the things that are important to us. The things that will make our homes, businesses and opportunities awesome.
What are you celebrating today?
