I have a friend who always used to remind me that one can’t win the lotto if they don’t buy a ticket. Let’s assume you followed this thinking and bought a lotto ticket would you keep it somewhere safe just in case you win? Or would you take it home and burn it with a lighter?
My guess is that you would keep that lotto ticket in a safe place, somewhere where it can be easily found and generally out of harm’s way. You would not go out of your way to destroy it as that would make no sense. I mean this could be your key to great riches and escape from parts of your life you do not enjoy.
Well the good news is we all have winning lotto tickets. We all get moments in our lives of good fortune which are random and unplanned. For some it is the chance to attend a university and get a qualification that has the potential to change their lives. For some it is getting their first job and ability to start a career. For some it is getting a major client for their business or being introduced to a major investor. We all have them, these lotto tickets. The events that have the potential to change our lives completely going forward.
In the same way we would not get home and burn our lottery ticket, we should also endeavour not to squander good fortune when it comes by. I’m not talking about misfortune where someone accidentally throws your winning lotto ticket out. I’m talking about when you sabotage yourself by destroying your big opportunity. When good fortune comes our way we have to make sure we don’t squander the opportunity. We must not do things that we know will reduce the probability of success. That’s the equivalent of burning the lotto ticket.
That small opportunity, glimmer of hope or random dose of good fortune may actually be the ticket to the life you have always dreamed or desired. Grab it with both hands, protect it and fully exploit it. Don’t mess it up. Don’t burn the lotto ticket.
