Push with the head and pull with the heart

The heart wants what it wants and it is pointless trying to pretend it doesn’t. This can be expanded to include most known censory pleasures. Whether it refers to something we like to eat, taste, smell, feel or hear. In many cases this desire or longing drives behaviour in interesting ways. We once had the pleasure of owning two massive dogs that were a cross between a Great Dane and a Rottweiler. Legend from the breeder has it that when the mother Great Dane was in heat, the Rottweiler broke through the fence and we were the lucky beneficiaries. That dog knew what it wanted and was willing to break through a fence to get it.

It’s quite fascinating how a strong “pull” can initiate action from people. Ask any addict and they will likely agree with this. At some point, however, simply desiring something is just not enough. Ask anyone who has looked at themselves in the mirror and desired a physical change how difficult that can be. Or any single person gazing longingly at their crush. Simply desiring that person is not enough, no matter how strong the pull of attraction is. I’m sure many business people have dreams of the kind of organisation they wish to have. Clear pictures of what success looks like, today and in the future. Unfortunately, even the clarity of that vision is not enough.

At some point in order to effect change the pull needs to turn to a push. Growing up my Dad solidified this with the phrase “To live as a King, you must work as a slave”. In order for the heart to get what it desires, the head needs to push to make it happen. This means doing things and getting people to do things even when they don’t feel like doing it. One decides with their head first, and uses this choice to effect change.

The best example I can think of this for anyone who has played in a high stakes sporting fixture. The heart is usually in it for both teams. None of them probably want to lose. But simply desiring it is not enough. Ultimately, it comes down to the push of head. Who can make less mistakes, give away fewer fouls, manage the game better and make the more intelligent plays.

Therefore, we can always use our hearts to pull us towards where we want to go. However, ultimately whether will get there or not depends on our heads and our ability to push ourselves and create motion and momentum to get us there.
